WCAG 3.3.1: Error Identification
WCAG 3.3.1 Error Identification is a level A success criterion from WCAG 2.0. If an input error is found, the error is described in text. Colour alone is not enough.
People need to know which field failed and why.
How to test
Submit an empty checkout. Errors should be in text and point at the fields.
How to fix
List the errors in text and connect them to the fields.
Example that fails
The email field turns red and nothing is written.
Example that passes the check
The message says Enter an email address.
Shopify
Custom contact forms need an error element. Shopify Checkout already writes errors; do not hide them.
WooCommerce
Keep the WooCommerce error list. Do not hide .woocommerce-error.
WordPress
Show the form plugin's error message, not only a red border.
Wix
Turn on text errors for required fields.
