WCAG 1.4.9: Images of Text (No Exception)
WCAG 1.4.9 Images of Text (No Exception) is a level AAA success criterion from WCAG 2.0. At this level, images of text are only acceptable for pure decoration or where the text itself cannot be presented any other way, such as a logo.
The same people blocked by pictures of words get no exception for 'it looked nicer'.
How to test
Every promotional sentence should be selectable as real text.
How to fix
Rebuild banners as HTML. Leave only the logo as an image of text.
Example that fails
A category tile's only label is text inside a PNG.
Example that passes the check
The tile is a photo with an HTML heading.
Shopify
Use the collection list section's heading field rather than a tiled image with words baked in.
WooCommerce
Print category names as HTML under the thumbnail.
WordPress
Use a heading on the cover, not text in the image.
Wix
Put a text element on the gallery item.
