WCAG 1.2.6: Sign Language

WCAG 1.2.6 Sign Language is a level AAA success criterion from WCAG 2.0. Prerecorded audio in video can also be provided in sign language for people whose first language is sign.

Some deaf people read captions as a second language and follow sign more easily.

How to test

Check whether a sign-language inset or a separate signed version exists for spoken videos.

How to fix

Commission a signed version of key videos, such as how to measure a product or how returns work.

Example that fails

A returns policy is only a spoken video.

Example that passes the check

The returns page offers a signed version next to the captions.

Shopify

Add a second video block labelled Sign language under the spoken returns video.

WooCommerce

Add the signed video in a product or page tab named Sign language.

WordPress

Place the signed video in its own Video block with a heading.

Wix

Add a second video element and label it with a heading, not only a hover.
