WCAG 1.2.3: Audio Description or Media Alternative
WCAG 1.2.3 Audio Description or Media Alternative is a level A success criterion from WCAG 2.0. Prerecorded video needs an audio description of important visuals, or a full text alternative, when the soundtrack does not already describe them.
People who cannot see on-screen text, such as a discount that is only written on the frame.
How to test
Watch with your eyes closed. If a price or step appears only as text on screen, it fails this check.
How to fix
Either say those visuals in the narration, add an audio-description track, or publish a text alternative that includes them.
Example that fails
A recipe video shows the oven temperature only as text on screen.
Example that passes the check
The narrator says the oven temperature, so no extra track is required.
Shopify
Re-export the theme video so the voiceover states the on-screen offer, or add a text alternative in the section under the player.
WooCommerce
Add a written description of the on-screen steps under the product video.
WordPress
Put the visual details in a paragraph under the video if you do not have a description track.
Wix
Add a text alternative under the video that includes every on-screen offer.
