WCAG 3.1.2: Language of Parts

WCAG 3.1.2 Language of Parts is a level AA success criterion from WCAG 2.0. Passages in a different language are marked, so pronunciation changes for that passage.

A French product name inside an English page is mispronounced if it is not marked.

How to test

Find quotes and names in another language. They should have lang on the element.

How to fix

Add lang on the phrase, for example lang=fr on a French heading.

Example that fails

A French slogan in an English page has no lang.

Example that passes the check

The slogan is in a span with lang=fr.

Shopify

Wrap foreign phrases in the theme or product description with a span and lang.

WooCommerce

Mark foreign phrases in the product text.

WordPress

Use the block language attribute or a span.

Wix

Set the language on that text element if the editor allows, or wrap it in custom HTML with lang.
