WCAG 2.5.3: Label in Name

WCAG 2.5.3 Label in Name is a level A success criterion from WCAG 2.1. The accessible name of a control contains the visible text. If a button shows Search, its accessible name should include Search.

Speech-input users say the visible label. If the accessible name differs, the command misses.

How to test

Compare the visible words with the accessibility tree name.

How to fix

Do not replace the visible label with a different aria-label. Include the visible words.

Example that fails

A button shows Go and the aria-label is Submit query.

Example that passes the check

The button shows Search and the accessible name is Search.

Shopify

If you set aria-label on a header button, include the visible word, or use visually hidden text that matches it.

WooCommerce

Do not give the Place order button a different aria-label.

WordPress

Match aria-label to the visible button text.

Wix

Set the accessible name to include the words on the button.
