WCAG 2.4.6: Headings and Labels

WCAG 2.4.6 Headings and Labels is a level AA success criterion from WCAG 2.0. Headings and labels describe the topic or purpose. A heading that says Section 2, or a label that says Field, does not.

People navigating by headings or forms need those names to say what is inside.

How to test

Read the heading list and the form labels alone. Each should say what follows.

How to fix

Rename vague headings and labels.

Example that fails

A checkout heading says Information.

Example that passes the check

The heading says Delivery address.

Shopify

Name theme sections with headings that say what they contain, such as You may also like, not More.

WooCommerce

Label checkout fieldsets Delivery and Payment, not Details.

WordPress

Rewrite heading blocks that say Untitled or Click here.

Wix

Set heading text to the topic, not a placeholder.
