WCAG 2.2.2: Pause, Stop, Hide

WCAG 2.2.2 Pause, Stop, Hide is a level A success criterion from WCAG 2.0. Moving, blinking or scrolling content that starts automatically and lasts more than five seconds needs a way to pause, stop or hide it. The same applies to auto-updating content.

Moving carousels distract people and can block reading.

How to test

Watch the homepage for five seconds. If a carousel moves, there should be a pause button.

How to fix

Add a pause control, or do not autoplay the carousel.

Example that fails

A product carousel advances every three seconds with no pause.

Example that passes the check

A Pause button stops the carousel.

Shopify

In the slideshow section, turn off autoplay or add the pause control the theme provides.

WooCommerce

Disable slider autoplay in the theme or plugin and add a pause button.

WordPress

Do not autoplay the gallery. If you do, add a pause button.

Wix

Turn off autoplay on slideshows or enable the pause control.
