WCAG 2.1.4: Character Key Shortcuts

WCAG 2.1.4 Character Key Shortcuts is a level A success criterion from WCAG 2.1. If a single character key triggers an action, the person must be able to turn it off, remap it, or it must work only when the control is focused.

Speech-input users fire those shortcuts by accident when they speak.

How to test

Search scripts for keydown listeners on letters. Confirm they can be turned off or only apply when focused.

How to fix

Use modifier keys, or limit the shortcut to the focused widget.

Example that fails

Pressing S anywhere opens search and steals speech input.

Example that passes the check

Search opens with a button, and the slash shortcut runs only when the page is not in a text field.

Shopify

Remove theme scripts that listen for single letters on the whole document.

WooCommerce

Disable single-key shortcuts in search plugins.

WordPress

Turn off single-character shortcuts in help plugins.

Wix

Remove custom code that binds letter keys globally.
