WCAG 1.4.6: Contrast (Enhanced)
WCAG 1.4.6 Contrast (Enhanced) is a level AAA success criterion from WCAG 2.0. Enhanced contrast asks for 7:1 for normal text and 4.5:1 for large text. It is stricter than the 4.5:1 minimum.
People with more severe low vision need the higher ratio.
How to test
Measure body text and aim for 7:1 if you are targeting this level.
How to fix
Use near-black text on a light background, or the reverse.
Example that fails
Body text at 4.6:1 meets the minimum and misses the enhanced ratio.
Example that passes the check
Body text at #1a1714 on #f4efe6 is well above 7:1.
Shopify
Set the theme text colour close to black if you are aiming above the minimum.
WooCommerce
Choose the darkest palette option for body copy.
WordPress
Set the body colour in theme.json to a near-black.
Wix
Pick a near-black text colour in the site design panel.
