WCAG 1.4.13: Content on Hover or Focus
WCAG 1.4.13 Content on Hover or Focus is a level AA success criterion from WCAG 2.1. Extra content that appears on hover or focus should be dismissible, hoverable and persistent until the person moves away on purpose.
People who magnify the screen lose menus that vanish when the pointer shifts a few pixels.
How to test
Open a mega menu. Move the pointer onto the menu. It should stay. Press Escape and it should close.
How to fix
Keep the menu open while the pointer is over it, and close it on Escape.
Example that fails
A mini cart disappears as soon as the pointer leaves the icon, before the person can reach it.
Example that passes the check
The mini cart stays open until Escape or a close button.
Shopify
Edit the header script so the predictive cart and menus stay open on focus and close on Escape.
WooCommerce
Change the theme's hover menu so it also opens on focus and does not vanish between the link and the panel.
WordPress
Use a navigation block pattern that supports dismissal, or fix the theme script.
Wix
Set menus to open on click as well as hover, and provide a close control.
